1. Scope of this Online demonstration

As shown by the yellow highlight in the diagram above, this page contains a partial demo of Relona's technology. It covers only steps 1 and 2 as numbered in the diagram above. This demo displays the output of step 2 which is a set of alternative queries. Step 3 which uses a heuristic to automatically choose the single best alternative query is not part of this demo. If you want to see the complete demo, please return to the main demo page to learn how to obtain access.
2. Relona's Intent-Analysis Technology is Designed for Complex Queries
A search-query is complex when:
1. There are four or more words in the query, OR
2. Multiple words describe concepts in the query
The following are some examples of complex queries. Click the links to compare relevance on Google and Yahoo.
(Google) (Yahoo) how many accidents does poi fire dancing cause every year
(Google) (Yahoo) fuller brooch museum history
You will find that Google is more relevant than Yahoo, Ask.com and Microsoft for complex search queries. To compete better, the other search-engines need to improve their performance on complex queries.
Complex queries are important not merely for competitive reasons. Yahoo reported in a 2006 analyst call that queries have been getting steadily more complex over the years. In 1998, the average query length was 1.2 words. But by 2006, it had grown to 3.3 words. Complex queries are no longer rare - in a few years the majority of searches will be for complex queries.
3. The Online Demo Displays Alternative Queries
This online demo computes the search-intent of a complex query (step 1 of the diagram above). Next it generates alternative ways of phrasing the query (step 2). At least one of these alternative queries usually produces more relevant search-results than the user's original query.
For example, when Relona analyzes the query fuller brooch museum history it suggests the alternative query "fuller brooch" museum history as shown in this screenshot.
You will find that on the original query, Google performs better than Yahoo. But on the suggested alternative "fuller brooch" museum history Yahoo is as accurate as Google.
Similarly, on the query how many accidents does poi fire dancing cause every year Relona suggests the alternative accidents poi "fire dancing" which helps Yahoo produce results that are as relevant as Google (View Screenshot).
This online demo displays all the alternatives generated by step-2. When looking at these alternatives, remember that Relona's heuristic (step-3) can automatically choose the most effective alternative query. You can obtain access to a complete demo (including the heuristic selector of step-3) by sending an email to info[at]relona[dot]com.
Enter your queries for analysis by Relona using the button above.
Relona suggests better alternatives for complex queries. For simple queries where all search-engines perform equally well, Relona will not suggest any alternatives.
